Health Benefits of Herbs and Spices

The global market for seasonings, herbs and spices could benefit from the recent increase in media and consumer interest for natural, functional ingredients (healthy naturals), according to a new report.

RTS Research predicts that the demand for healthy products will increase significantly over the next five years, creating key opportunities for food manufacturers.

Whilst the health benefits of herbs and spices have long been advocated by some, scientists are now investigating whether regular consumption of certain herbs and spices could help prevent disease, reduce inflammation and even aid weight loss.

Cinnamon, oregano, paprika and ginger all boast high levels of antioxidants and Vitamin C, believed to be beneficial for healthy immune systems and preventing disease, while ginger is also being investigated for its digestive properties.

Other beneficial herbs and spices include turmeric, which could be used for its links with brain health - an emerging trend according to RTS Resource; thyme for respiratory health; rosemary for its anti-inflammatory properties (thought to reduce the risk of heart disease, allergies and even Alzheimers). Meanwhile, with weight management set to become a major trend over the next five years, according to RTS Research, cayenne and fennel are likely to be favoured for increasing satiety and promoting healthy metabolism - two crucial components of weight management products.

RTS Resource Director, Jamie Rice, advises caution for manufacturers looking to exploit these latest trends. “While the health benefits of cinnamon, ginger and paprika may be widely acknowledged by consumers, food manufacturers still need to step carefully. Health claims surrounding herbs and spices remains a legislative grey area, but as more scientific research is done, the picture will become clearer. Nevertheless, we see this as a key area for herbs and spices during the next five years.”
